Humberto Gurmilan
Press Secretary

Humberto Gurmilan was born in Chula Vista, California, and is passionate about communication and serving his community. Prior to serving as Press Secretary for Supervisor Nora Vargas and District 1, he worked as a journalist for Telemundo in San Diego and as a Journalism and Communications professor at San Diego City College and Southwestern College.

Humberto’s community involvement spans nearly two decades and includes work for various boards and organizations. He served on the Board of Directors for Access to Independence, he is a currently a member of the San Diego Mobility Board, the California School Boards Association Delegate Assembly, and the San Ysidro School District Governing Board.

Humberto survived a traumatic spinal cord injury in his youth and is now an advocate for people with disabilities. He founded the Gurmilan Foundation, a nonprofit organization to help empower individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential, is a self-published author, and shares his story and passion for surfing to inspire others.

Humberto holds an M.A. in Strategic Communication from National University and a B.A. in Communication from San Diego State University. He’s driven to maximize his second chance at life and his hope is to make a positive change in the lives of others.
